No strings attached
On the first demo Fredrik showed me, Anders Fästader played bass and Tomas Broman played the drums. Then Richard and Peter Kahm got involved. R&P had played together before in the band It’s Alive. We did some shows (playing covers) under the name Der Bomber. Later John joined, don’t remember exactly when. First the band was called Eyeball, but eventually we chose Southpaw.
We recorded the album in the spring/summer of 1997. I was also writing/recording the Yngwie album at that time, so I worked with Southpaw between my visits in Miami. Pontus Norgren was engineering & mixing.
The album cover with the guitar strings, was intended for Yngwie’s album first. My friend/photographer Steff Granström presented the idea to Yngwie, but he didn’t approve. We thought it looked great though, so we used it instead.
Listening to the album today, the songs are quite varied in style which might not have been the smartest thing if you want to sell records. No regrets though, we all just wanted to do something we hadn’t done before and we did.
Fredrik played some outstanding guitar on the album. I knew how good he was, but I wanted to hear him play more different types of solos than with for example Talisman - he did just that.
This unit might actually be the most competent I’ve played with, we sounded killer when we opened for Dio in Sweden (3-4 shows).
Richard is a fantastic drummer and John surprised me with his great bass playing, I’d only heard him with Europe before. His bass sound (Ampeg amp, Warmoth bass) was second to none.
Great to meet Ronnie Dio by the way, what a nice guy. People often tell me my vocals are loud on stage, but compared to Ronnie....it sounded like he had his own PA instead of monitors on stage.
I saw him play in Sao Paulo in 2004 and with Heaven&Hell in 2007, he just amazes me, having that powerful voice at that age - respect!
Z Records released our album, crappiest record label in history?
For a while Z Records were supposed to release a cd with old Treat demos that I sang on, but they couldn’t agree on the terms with our old management that owned the masters. During that time we sent them a dat-tape with the songs...big mistake.
Mark at Z Records was the only person on this planet that received the Treat demos in those versions that I edited myself for that specific tape. A couple of years later they appeared on the bootleg cd ”Muscle In Motion”. The picture on the front is actually with the 1987 lineup and it’s also a copyrighted photo from the ”Dreamhunter” album/photo session. I guess, if you steal the music you might as well steal the cover...
A couple of years ago Fredrik recorded demos with Richard & Johan Niemann that I sang on. Around this time we started Monsters Of Metal (playing metal covers). Then Sami Karppinen replaced Richard who was busy touring. Anyway, not much has happened with the demo songs, Fredrik’s been busy with Arch Enemy and now Opeth.
It’s great to see he’s finally getting all the attention he deserves, if Opeth play your town - go see them!!
