Wild Young & Free?
We started playing together in the cover band Double Trouble in 1988, at that time Petter Svärd was the drummer. With Swedish Erotica, they had used Göran Edman on their demos in ’87, and they got a record deal with Virgin after a trip to LA in ’88. In the fall of ’88 they recorded some songs with B.C. on drums and Tony Niva on vocals. I helped them out with backing vocals together with Lasse Kronér at the Tuff Studio.
In the beginning of ’89, their recording got started in Norway with Ole Evenrude producing. I did most of the backing vocals, soon Ole approached me and wondered why I didn’t sing lead with the band.
I told him I had already said no when they asked me a year before, but now I was interested. I more or less replaced Tony on the spot, he actually sat on the other side of the window when I started to redo the lead vocals...strange feeling.
Videos were made for the first two singles, Ulf Malmros directed the first one (R’n’R City). Because of the band’s name, we got more press than anyone else at Virgin Scandinavia. Our second single (Wild Young & Free) went up the charts and the album was just released when the distribution company (Elektra) went bankrupt and the records were stuck in some storage room for a month or so.
No records came out to the shops when required, that kind of killed the album.
We played a couple of shows in the UK, the first was at the Astoria in London. It was around 700-800 people there, we were surprised - the album wasn’t even released there yet. Probably the crowd expected us to bring strippers or something.
The reception was quite good, before the first encore I was talking to the audience when I suddenly heard the backing vocals for ”Break The Walls” in the speakers...B.C. hadn’t turned off the backing vocals/click tape after the last song of the set. Thaaaanks...
I remember our opening band was called L.O. Girls - bloody horrible, Bad News for real.
I think it was in the spring of 1990 that we recorded the demo for the next album. Virgin listened to it, but probably wanted songs more like the first two singles that Ole had written. That demo can be heard (and other demos) on the MTM release of last year, called ”Too Daze Gone”.
Around this time Jamie Borger (who had played in an earlier version of Sw.Erotica), told me his band Treat was looking for a singer.
I guess I didn’t really believe in Virgin Records or the future of the band anymore and I also wanted to move from Gothenburg to Stockholm.
When I told the boss at Virgin I wanted to quit the band, he said ”Great, we’re only interested in you anyway - let’s make a solo album!” When I said I intended to leave the label, he said ”no way!”. Treat’s manager Uwe Block pulled some strings, and a few weeks later there were suddenly no problems at all.
I’ve always stayed in touch with Magnus, great guy & good friend. I’ve played at his club Sticky Fingers a number of times. Last year I met the other guys again since MTM wanted to release the old demos. It was great seeing them, I have a lot of good memories from our time together. Swedish Erotica was the first band I released an album and toured with, indeed an experience.
